Sporting Competitions 2023-2024

Our children enjoy a large range of PE and Sports in school.  Children represent our school in a range of competitions throughout each school year.  Many competitions are entered through our Outwood Together partnership, through direct entry in regional competitions or Intra-sport competition.

 

The competitions on offer are a mixture of both Virtual and on-site face to face.

Outwood Together Cross Country Event - October 2023

 

What a pleasure it was this afternoon to to see the determination on the faces of our KS2 runners as they competed in the annual Cross Country Event. Every child set out to achieve their personal goals in some form and without doubt they did just that. There were a number of stand-our performances across the races and it was fantastic to see all of the children encouraging each other on to accomplish great things. 

 

We now await the results  on the potential path to the next round.

Stanley Grove 3v3 Intra-School National Sports Day Event: June 2023

We celebrated National Sports Week with the support of GTSports of running our annual National Sports Day Event. This involved the whole school, from EYFS to Upper KS2 being split into teams of 3, each assigned a country; and competing in a wide range of sporting activities. Some familiar, some less familiar. 

 

On the day, it was great to see the engagement and enjoyment on the childrens' faces as they faced off. There were a number of stand-out performances across the key stages and it was a delight to see the children encouraging each other regardless of results. Each child has been given a certificate for participation and attitude and 3 children from each class will receive a medal for outstanding performance. 

 

We now await the final results where the winning 'Nation' team will receive their trophy in assembly. 

Outwood Together Outdoor Orienting Event - June 2023

A super afternoon had by Year 5 and children from Year 4 in the Outwood Together Orienteering event! Split into different teams, the children perfected their orienteering skills, working as a team to get themselves to a variety of different points. Lots of problem solving and communication took place.

Outwood Together Quick Sticks Hockey Winners: June 2023

 

What a fantastic day and experience our Year 5 and 6 Cricket team had! Taking part in the annual Outwood Together Quick Cricket competition held at Wrenthorpe Cricket Club, our team of 10 children played magnificently against 3 other teams in the cohort showing determination, perseverance and encouragement throughout. Winning all 3 of their games, the children performed to the best of their abilities applying all the skills, which they had learnt in the previous weeks PE and after-school Sports sessions. 

 

Ultimately, we were crowned 'Winners'. An achievement richly deserved for their effort and commitment. Well done our 'Cricket Champions'. 

Outwood Together: Quick Sticks Hockey - April 2023

What a super afternoon the children had! Focusing on the key skills of Quick Sticks hockey, which was then applied to a competitive game situation. Outstanding effort and teamwork on show as ever. 

Yorkshire Cross Country Finals Event: Temple Newsam - April 2023

Our 17 children had a fantastic afternoon at Temple Newsam competing in the finals of the Wakefield Cross Country Event. 

Throughout the different races, which included Y4 - Y6 children, there was fierce competition with up to 136 runners at a time. All of our children performed fantastically, demonstrating high levels of perseverance. 

 

There were a number of stand-out performances in the races. In particular, one our year 4 boys finished in an incredible 7th place out of 136 competitors. 

 

An outstanding achievement by all the children. 

National Cross Country Event - Loughborough March 23

A huge well done to one of our very determined Year 5 pupils, who had the privilege of being invited to compete for West Yorkshire in the National Cross Country Championships. The field of competitors from around the country was of an incredibly high standard and we are so proud of her achievements. Such an inspiration!

Outwood Together KS1 Bench ball Competition: March 2023

What a joy it was to be able to watch the fantastic skills on show during the KS1 Bench ball competition! The children, who represented our school, demonstrated excellent teamwork, great sportsmanship and put in to practise the skills they had been focusing on in sessions leading up to the event. 

 

There were stand-out performances and games which were too close to call. Unfortuntely, we did not win. However, we were the highest scoring team in the competition which is something we celebrate. 

 

Well done to all of the children who took part. 

West Yorkshire Cross Country Event - March 2023

Unfortunately, in light of the snow the, a decision was taken by Yorkshire Sport to cancel the event which was being held at Temple Newsam.

 

This event has now been rearranged for April 2023.  

Outwood Together Girls' Football Competition: February 2023

Another event in the sporting calendar saw our KS2 girls compete against a number of different schools from within the Wakefield pyramid at the Wakefield Football Centre. 

In the group stages, the girls played magnificently continuing the spirit, determination and resilience the boys showed a week before. Throughout the group stage, there were a number of standout performances which resulted in the team qualifying to the 'Knockout stages' as the 2nd best placed team.

 

However, that is where the competition ended for the girls where they were beaten but certainly not outplayed. 

 

We continue to be incredibly proud of all of the children who represent our school at these events. Well done girls. 

Outwood Together Boys' Football Competition - January 2023

 

In the recent Boys' Football Competition held at Wakefield Football Centre, 10 of our Year 4 -6 children played their hearts out in a series of competitive games against a number of schools in the Wakefield region. Throughout each games, they demonstrated the core values we look for to inspire in all of our children - playing fair, being respectful and accepting the results. 

 

After coming top of their pool group winning all 3 games, they made it to the knockout stages of the competition where they played the winners of their pool group - Jerry Clay. Despite playing magnificently, it was not to be for our boys and they lost 2 - 0 to Jerry Clay, who would later go on to win the whole competition. 

 

We are incredibly proud of all of the boys. An outstanding afternoon!

Outwood Together KS1 Dance Competition: December 2023

 

At the beginning of the month, eight of our KS1 children finally performed their dance routine which they had been busily practising in the previous weeks. It was a real treat to see the hard work come together in what was a really enjoyable, energetic and fun routine. Well done to those involved!

 

 

 

Outwood Together Year 5/6 Girls' Indoor Sports Hall Athletics - November 2022

What a fantastic time had by our 10 Year 5/6 children during the 'Girls' Indoor Athletics competition' held at Rothwell Leisure Centre! Throughout the afternoon, the girls competed in a variety of events including 1+2 Lap relay, 6 Lap paaralauf, Standing Long Jump and Speed Bounce. Despite not winning, all of the girls demonstrated a real determination to perform to their absolute best and were a credit to the school. 

 

Well done to all of the children who took part. 

KS2 Sportability - Rothwell Leisure Centre: Nov 22

Eight of our KS2 children were involved in a fantastic afternoon led by ACES Education focusing on those sports, which are less known to children. Some of these included New Age Curling, Boccia and Blind Basketball. Throughout the afternoon, each child was able to have a go at the sport and develop their skills in a fun and engaging environment. 

 

Outwood Together Tag Rugby Event - Newton Hill: Oct 2022

Taking part in the annual Outwood Together Tag Rugby competition, which this year was held at Newton Hill, our 10 Year 5/6 went with the aim of showcasing their collective Tag Rugby skills. 

 

Facing some very tough opposition throughout the different matches, it was a pleasure to see the confidence which the children had to apply those key rugby skills learnt in PE sessions to actual game situations. After an exhausting set of matches, the children finished in a very respectable 3rd place. 

 

They were later presented with medals and certificates in recognition for their attitude and effort, achievement and participation. Well done to those involved!

Outwood Together Virtual Cross Country Event - Oct 2022

Recently, our KS2 children were due to take part in the Cross Country event being held at Stanley St Peters. Unfortunately, due to terrible weather conditions in the lead up to the day, this event was changed to a virtual format. 

 

So, carrying out the event virtually, our children competed in their respective distance races with the aim of recording their quickest time possible. During the races, it was wonderful to see the outstanding attitude of our children who certainly gave it their absolute best. Well done to those involved.

KS2 Sports Day - July 2022

What a fantastic morning we had for our KS2 Sports Day! Children from across the Key Stage were supported by the brilliant turnout of parents cheering them on during all the different events and that of their class friends. 

 

There was plenty of competitive spirit and determination on show throughout the event which was a real pleasure to see. After some very close competition and points totals, it was our 'Red Team' who were the 2022 winners!

 

 

 

Year 5 Mini Tennis - July 2022

As part of on-going commitment to engaging children in sports they may not have tried, 10 of our Year 5 boys and girls spent the afternoon at Slazengers Tennis Club practising a range of skills related to tennis. They focused on control, communication and movement throughout with some excellent coaching from the team at Slazengers. It was great to see the children have a wonderful time with the sun shining down. 

Tri Golf 'Have a go session' - June 2022

Children from across KS2 had a fun and exciting afternoon when they took part in something a little different - Tri Golf. As part the session, the children worked their way around a series of golf themed activities.

 

Happy faces greeted us upon their arrival and they clearly enjoyed the new experience!

PE Day - 3 v 3 Intra School Competition: 

We had a fantastic day in June as part of 'National Sport Week' when all our children from Reception through to Year 6 took part in our 3 x 3 Intra-school event. Children in each class were split in to teams of 3 representing a country which was then replicated across school. 

 

Taking part in a total of 10 events, the children demonstrated throughout the day teamwork, courage, resilience, sportsmanship and accepting the outcome in the right way, whatever it may be.  In order for their to be a winner, the teams accrued points across these events which was dependent on how many points were scored within each game.

Wakefield Yorkshire Cross Country Event - Temple Newsam: March 2022

 

Earlier this month, our five Year 3 boys who won their respective heat in the Outwood Together Virtual Cross Country back in November,  represented the Wakefield district in the annual Sports Games Cross Country event at Temple Newsam. 

 

All five of the children performed incredibly hard showing grit, determination and perseverance throughout. After what was a very competitive race consisting of 100 children, all of our children placed in the top 80 with one of our children finishing the race in an incredible 16th place.

Outwood Together Virtual Cross Country event update - December 2021

 

We are pleased to announce that after receiving the Virtual Cross Country results, our Year 3 boys were the winners of their year cohort race and as such will be invited to the next round of the competition to take part against other clusters in March 2022. A fantastic achievement and a huge well done to the boys and everyone else from the school who took part in the event. Congratulations to the overall winners St. Paul's.

Please find below information relating to the Virtual competitions on offer to all of our KS1 and KS2 children. Results for these competitions are to be submitted to our local Sports Games Organiser by 18th February 2022. 

 

Outwood Together Virtual Cross Country event - October 2021

Our KS2 children are currently taking part in the Outwood Together Virtual Cross Country which runs until Wednesday 5th November. The aim of the event is to run a distance of 1200m in the quickest time possible. All times collected will create a cumulative total time for each class.

Outwood Together - Boccia Skills Competition: June 2021

 

Recently, 5 of our children from KS2 took part in the recent Boccia skills event which was designed to focus on those throwing skills and hitting the target area as accurately as possible. As a team, each of the 5 children took part in 4 separate  rounds aiming to collect the highest possible points total according to the area of the target they landed on from their two individual throws.

 

Over the course of the rounds, there were some close calls seeing a mixture of emotions being displayed.  The children worked fantastic as a team showing great encouragement, team spirit and sporting attitude. 

 

We are incredibly proud of their effort and achievements!

Outwood Together 'Football skills competition' - May 2021

Last week, we had 122 children from Reception right up to Year 6 take part in the Virtual Football skills competition as part of the Outwood Together pyramid. In what was a challenging week weather wise, all of the children tackled the challenge head on and performed magnificently showing great control and technique moving the ball in and out of the cones and then completing the course either through dribbling to the goal or shooting. 

 

All groups of children who performed set really competitive times for scoring the 10 goals but it was our Reception children who were the 'Shining stars' this week, coming first in their respective category. 

 

Remember to keep moving and keep having fun!

 

The Daily Mile Challenge - Friday 30th April 

Today our children part in the national Daily Mile challenge as part of the campaign to support Children's Mental Health. Over 170 children across 6 classes brought out their best and applied themselves 100% to ensure that they, like other Primary Schools up and down the country, kept moving!

 

It was a fantastic effort from all of the children who thoroughly enjoyed the challenge!

Outwood Together 'Virtual Rugby Agility Competition' - April 2021

This week finally saw the return of competitive sports in the form of the Virtual Rugby Agility Competition within the Outwood Together Pyramid.

 

Over 100 children from across KS1 and KS2 got in to the competitive spirit aiming to record the fastest time possible around a set course. This tested their movement and agility whilst allowing them to show all those characteristics - determination, perseverance and I can do attitude. 

 

Well done to all of the children who took part and a huge congratulations to our Year 1 children who came first in the Year 1 section of the competition. You were all outstanding!

Virtual Cross Country Success

After the excitement of the Virtual Cross Country competition in October, we had a wait to see how we had performed compared to the other schools in the Wakefield area. 

It is with great pride and excitement that we can share the results of how we performed. In the respective races, all our classes showed great determination and spirit but there were two classes which stood out. 

 

Firstly, this was our Class 6 boys, who came in a very respectable 3rd place out of 19 competing schools and consisting of 128 participants. 

Secondly, our Year 5 girls who finished 1st place in a cluster consisting of 19 schools from the local area and 112 participants. 

 

An outstanding achievement!

Virtual Cross Country - October 2020 @ Stanley Grove

Recently, children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in the annual Outwood Together Cross country event. This is an event which is usually held centrally but due to current circumstances was carried out Virtually at our school. For each year group, the distance to be covered was 1200m and each boys and girls race produced a number of outstanding performances with a great level of determination and resilience on display.

 

We await now for the Outwood Together Cross Country results to be released.

Bee Netball Event - Outwood Together

Last week, nine of our Year 6 boys and girls took part in the Bee Netball competition which was held at St Pauls Alverthorpe. After weeks of hard training, the children produced some fantastic Netball throughout their games and gave a really good account of themselves playing against some top Netball athletes from the other schools. Despite not winning, the team finished in a respectable 4th place. Well done Year 6. 

Year 5/6 Outwood Together Hockey Competition

Held at Slazengers Hockey club, six of our Year 5 and 6 girls took part in a very competitive Hockey event involving a number of teams from the Outwood Together cohort. There was some excellent hockey on show from all teams but despite not triumphing this time, our children represented the school fantastically and gave a good account of themselves.

Year 5/6 Girls Outwood Together Indoor Athletics - Nov 2019

Just a week on from the boys' competition, it was the turn of our Year 5/6 girls to compete in a wide range of Indoor Athletics events covering both track and field. As the boys did in the previous week, all of the girls performed incredibly well against some fantastic athletes. There were strong performances in the speed bounce and the relay to name a few. But even though there was no trophy this time, all of the girls can be commended on their attitude and behaviour. Well done girls.

Year 5/6 Boys Outwood Together Indoor Athletics - Nov 2019

Taking part in a wide range of events, 13 of our year 5 and 6 boys worked tirelessly throughout the competition demonstrating the high levels of sportsmanship, perseverance and resilience . Although we weren't able to win overall on the day, the continued enthusiasm shown by all our children is something to be proud of. An excellent effort against very strong competition from the Outwood pyramid.

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Event - Stanley Grove Primary School

Stanley Grove was proud to host the recent Year 5/6 Outwood Together Tag Rugby competition. Although our Year 5 and 6 teams did not win, all children who took part in the competition demonstrated a great deal of reserve, a high level of teamwork and sportsmanship. A real credit to the school.

Year 4 Multi-skills Festival Outwood Grange - October 2019

Taking part in the Year 4 Multi-skills Festival, our boys and girls got the opportunity to experience a range of fun and engaging activities aimed at getting the children to experience something different with a focus still on 'keeping moving'. All of the children were enthusiastic for all of the activities, some of which included Curling, cup stacking and a relay version of moving with a shuttlecock whilst balanced on a badminton racket.

This Girl Can Footie Festival - Crofton Academy October 2019

 

As part of our on-going commitment to promoting all sporting opportunities, eight of our Year 5 and 6 girls took part in the 'This Girl Can' Footie Festival. During the event the girls had the opportunity to play against a number of girls from the local area. Throughout the games, all of the girls demonstrated some great skills and a real togetherness. Well done girls!

Year 2 Dance competition

 

Our year 2 children took part in the yearly Outwood Together Dance competition held at Wrenthorpe Academy whereby they performed a 3 minute routine to an audience. The routine was full of energy and included plenty of opportunity for both individual and group transitions. After a great performance by the children, they were awarded runners-up. Well done!

Outwood Together Cross Country Event - September 2019

Twelve of our Year 4 and 5 students travelled to St Peters to take part in the Outwood Together Cross Country event. Each child showed a great level of competitiveness, attitude and respect regardless of winning or loosing. After some strong races, three of the children have qualified for the next stages of the Cross Country.

Upper Key Stage 2 Outwood Together Olympics Event

 

Thirteen of our Year 6 children took part in the end of Year Olympics themed competition. This involved the children competing in a range of sports including sprint, standing long jump, javelin and relay. All of the children performed incredibly well and although we did not finish in 1st place overall, the children were able to do the school proud by winning a number of events.

 

As ever, the school is proud of all the children's achievements this year and the enthusiasm that continue to show at all events. Well done!

Year 5/6 Tri Golf competition June 2019

 

Last Friday, 10 of our Upper Key stage children took part in a Tri Golf competition which was held at the Wakefield Golf Club. It was a new experience for the boys and girls and they thoroughly enjoyed being able to play a sport which is not common to them.

Year 3 Benchball Competition: June 2019

Last week, nine of our Year 3 boys and girls competed in the Year 3 Outwood Together Benchball tournament which was held at Middleton Leisure Centre. Despite facing tough competition in every game they played, each child performed to their best as individuals using the skills they had learnt in PE lessons and applied this as a team producing high quality Benchball skills. As just rewards, team Stanley Grove came home with the WINNERS trophy! A fantastic achievement.

 

Year 5/6 Outwood Together Kwik Cricket Tournament May 2019: Runners Up

 

Eight of our Year 5/6 children went to Wrenthorpe Cricket Club to take part in the annual Kwik Cricket tournament. It was a fun day had by the children as usual they performed to the highest standards, showing great character and skill and working enthusiastically as a team. After a full days play, the children finished as RUNNERS UP!

A well deserving achievement for all.

Year 4 Dodgeball: April 2019

Our team of excited boys and girls recently competed in the Outwood Together Dodgeball event  which was held at Middleton Leisure Centre. Throughout the number of games, high levels of skills were seen from the children utilising what they had learnt in their PE sessions. Despite not winning the competition, our children came in a very respectful 3rd place. Well done to all of our children.

West Yorkshire Cross Country Event - Temple Newsam

Temple Newsam was the host to the regional Cross Country finals and our two KS2 boys were in action in the Year 4 and 5 races respectively.

Both races were action packed with a range of districts being represented and despite our boys not placing in the top 3 finishes overall, they both finished in the top two out of the Wakefield competitors.

KS2 Cross Country - February 2019

This week four of our KS2 children who had progressed from Outwood Together competition in November 2018, took part in the further stages of the KS2 Cross Country event which was held at Crigglestone All Blacks ARLFC. Each child, as ever, represented the school brilliantly and to the highest standards.

 

It was a great event enjoyed by all and we were highly delighted to celebrate the success of two of our children who finished 1st in their individual Year 4 and Year 5 races. Our two 1st place runners will now compete in the regional finals at Temple Newsam in March.

 

Boys Indoor Athletics Competition

Recently 10 of our boys took part in the Indoor Athletics competition competing against all of the other schools in the Outwood Together cohort. Some of the events which the children competed in were speed bounce, vertical jump, standing jump and relay. All the children represented the school brilliantly and performed fantastically.

Year 4, 5 and 6 Cross Country

The children competed in the yearly Outwood Together Cross Country event which was held at St Peters Primary School. Despite having a small team, six of our children qualified for the next round to be held early next year. A huge well done to all children who took part.

Year 4, 5 and 6 Girls Football League Competition: Winners September 2018

The girls from Year 4, 5 and 6 had a brilliant time at Stanley St Peters as part of the Girls Football League. Playing incredibly well and showing great flare and teamwork they came in first place. Well done girls on a fantastic achievement.

Academic Year 2017-18

Year 5/6 Olympics competition

A number of year 5 and 6 children took part in a variety of track and field events at Stanley St Peters. All of the children did brilliantly, representing the school fantastically and achieving a 3rd place finish. Great job year 5 and 6!

Year 5 Kwik Cricket Competition: Wrenthorpe Cricket Club

Just this week, nine of our Year 5 children took part in the Kwik cricket tournament which was held at Wrenthorpe Cricket Club. With the sun shining down our children had a great time competing against a number of other schools in the area. Although they didn't win, all of the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Well done!

Year 4 Gymnastics Results

After performing their choreographed routines, our Year 4 children were excited to find out that they had come 3rd place in their Key Steps Gymnastics class category. A fantastic achievement by each child. This was then further celebrated in weekly KS2 assembly.

Year 4 Direct Entry Gymnastics - De Lacy Academy

Five of our Class 4 children will take part in the Direct Entry Gymnastics competition this week. This will involve each child performing a routine which includes both floor and mat elements. Good luck Year 4.

Cross Country Competition

Both boys and girls from KS2 took part in the yearly Cross Country competition held at Rooks Nest. The races themselves were competitive with great levels of athleticism on show ensuring close finishes. Again, all of the children represented the school exceptionally well.

Mixed Netball Tournament

 

Our Year 5/6 boys and girls took part in the Outwood Together cohort Netball tournament at St Pauls. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and relished the competitive spirit displayed by all those involved on the day. All children were a credit to the school and showed some solid Netball skills!

Stanley Grove Tag Rugby Tournament

A fantastic day had by all competing teams from the Outwood Together cohort. Girls and boys from Year 5 and 6 worked tirelessly to put on a show and our A and B teams represented Stanley Grove with incredible enthusiasm, perseverance and team spirit. Well done!

Year 3 Benchball Tournament: St John's Primary School

Recently, ten of our Year 3 boys and girls competed in the Outwood Together Benchball competition at St John's Primary School. Although they didn't win, it was great to see all of the children using the skills they had been practising in PE lessons and fundamentally working together as a strong team. As a result of this, they won four matches during the competition. A great achievement Year 3!
